If your neck feels tight by the end of the day, it isn't a mystery. It's the predictable result of holding your head still, and slightly forward, for hours at a time. Here's what's actually going on — and what helps.

Your head is heavier than you think

An adult head weighs roughly 5 kilograms — about the same as a bowling ball. When it sits balanced over your shoulders, your skeleton carries most of that weight and your muscles barely have to work.

Lean toward a screen and the balance shifts. Your head is now in front of its own support, and the muscles at the back of your neck have to hold it there. They don't get a break until you sit up again.

The bones: seven small vertebrae

Your neck — the cervical spine — is a stack of seven vertebrae, labelled C1 at the base of your skull down to C7, where your neck meets your upper back. Between each one sits a soft disc that cushions the load and lets you nod, turn and tilt.

Stacked naturally, they form a gentle backward curve, and that curve is what spreads weight evenly through the stack. Hours of leaning forward flattens it, so pressure concentrates toward the front of those discs instead of being shared.

The muscles doing the overtime

Four muscle groups take most of the strain:

  • Upper trapezius — the broad muscle running from the base of your skull out to each shoulder. This is the one that feels like a tight band across the top of your shoulders.
  • Levator scapulae — runs from the side of your neck down to your shoulder blade. Often the source of that sharp spot where the neck meets the shoulder.
  • Suboccipitals — four small muscles right at the base of the skull. Tiny, but they work constantly to keep your eyes level, and they're a well-known source of tension headaches.
  • Sternocleidomastoid — the rope-like muscle down the side of your neck. It shortens as your chin drifts forward.

Why sitting still is the problem

Muscles are happiest moving. A muscle held in a low-level contraction for hours — which is exactly what holding your head up amounts to — tires out without ever getting the recovery that movement brings. Blood flow drops, the muscle stays partly switched on, and by mid-afternoon it feels tight and tender.
